Binders
Where collections live. Pocket layouts, side-loading versus top-loading, and which pages are polypropylene rather than PVC.
A binder lets a collection be viewed without handling each card. Three things decide whether it protects or damages: the pocket layout, whether pages load from the side or the top, and what the pages are made of — some binder pages are still vinyl, which is PVC.
Pocket layouts
The 9-pocket page is the default, and its pockets measure 2⅝ × 3⅝ inches — the same dimensions as a penny sleeve, which is why a sleeved card fits a pocket snugly rather than loosely.
Beyond that, pages come in 4, 6, 8, 12 and 20-pocket layouts for different card sizes and densities. An 18-pocket page is not a different grid — it is a double-sided sheet with nine pockets on each face.

Side-loading versus top-loading
Top-loading pockets open upward, which means a binder tipped upside down can shed its contents. Side-loading pockets open toward the spine, so gravity alone cannot empty them.
For anything you care about, side-loading is the safer format, and it is what most premium binders now ship with as standard.
The page material problem
This is the part worth reading twice. BCW sells binder pages in two quite different materials: polypropylene pages described as acid-free with no PVC, and pages described as heavy-duty double-polished clear vinyl.
Vinyl is polyvinyl chloride. Conservation guidance from the US National Archives advises avoiding PVC because it generates acids that fade images over time and can stick to what it holds — with the guidance naming printed items such as baseball cards specifically.
Both products sit under the same heading on the same shop. If you are storing a collection for years rather than months, check which material you are buying, and prefer pages that state polypropylene.
Capacity, and what double-sleeving costs you
Binder capacity is quoted for single-sleeved cards, and double-sleeving eats into it measurably. Dragon Shield's Card Codex Zipster holds 20 pages for 360 cards single-sleeved, but only 18 pages for 324 cards if the cards are double-sleeved.
That is roughly a 10% loss of capacity, which matters if you are sizing a binder for a set you intend to complete.

- Do binder pages damage cards?
- They can, depending on the material. Pages sold as vinyl are PVC, which conservation guidance advises against for long-term contact because it generates acids and can stick to printed items. Polypropylene pages, usually labelled as containing no PVC, are the safer choice.
