What a team bag is actually for
A toploader is a rigid sleeve with one open end. It stops bending and it stops edge impact, but nothing stops the card sliding back out of the top, and nothing stops dust and humidity entering the same way. That open end is the whole reason team bags exist.
The bag goes over the loaded toploader and seals with an adhesive strip on the flap. The result is a rigid holder that is also closed. This is the standard way cards are handed over at a show or dropped into a mailer, and it is why sellers buy team bags by the hundred rather than one at a time.
The name is a leftover from sports collecting, where a bag held one team's set from a boxed release. The format outlived the use case. Almost nobody buying them today is bagging a team.

The stated capacity runs three ways depending on what you put in: about 35 standard trading cards loose, up to 5 standard toploaders, or magnetic one-touch holders up to 180 pt. One bag over one toploader is the common use; five at once is possible but makes a brick that is awkward to seal flat.
BCW describes the material as crystal-clear, acid-free, archival-quality polypropylene. Polypropylene is one of the stable plastics conservation guidance accepts for long-term contact with collections, alongside polyethylene and polyester, so a bag left sealed for years is not itself a hazard.
Resealable is not the same as airtight
The adhesive strip is designed to be opened and closed repeatedly, which is what makes the bag practical for cards that move between a binder, a show and a buyer. That same property means it is not a seal in any moisture-barrier sense.
So a team bag keeps dust, fingerprints and casual handling off a card. It does not control humidity, and it is not a substitute for storing the collection somewhere stable. Sealing a damp card inside plastic traps the problem rather than solving it.
It also does nothing about light. A bagged toploader on a shelf in daylight is still accumulating exposure, and light damage is cumulative and irreversible.
Where it sits against a card saver
For grading submission, the format is not the question a bag answers. PSA asks for semi-rigid card savers rather than toploaders, so the bag is irrelevant to that path — the holder choice is what matters, and that is covered on the card savers page.
For shipping and trading, the bag is the piece most people skip and then regret. A loose toploader in an envelope lets the card work its way up and out of the holder in transit, and a card half out of a toploader in the post is a card taking impact on one corner.
