Vault X
Vault X is a British accessory maker, started in 2017 in Poole, whose Exo-Tec zip binders carry an unusually complete published specification: capacity, page count, internal pocket size, and outer dimensions to the millimetre. Every pocket in the range measures 68 × 97 mm. The one thing the listings do not say is which polymer the pages are made from.
A pocket size, published
Almost no binder maker publishes the internal size of a pocket. Vault X does, and it is the same figure across the 4-, 9- and 12-pocket Exo-Tec binders: 68 × 97 mm.
That number is what lets you check fit instead of assuming it. A standard sleeve is 66 × 91 mm, so a single-sleeved card has about 2 mm of width and 6 mm of height to spare. A Japanese-size sleeve at 62 × 89 mm sits looser, which is what the side-loading pocket is there to manage.
What the pocket figure does not tell you is thickness, and the listings quote capacity in “standard-sized cards” without saying whether those cards are sleeved. Dragon Shield rates its Zipster at 360 single-sleeved but 324 double-sleeved; Ultra Pro quotes capacity in Deck Protector sleeves. Vault X quotes a count and leaves the sleeving state to you. Treat the capacity as a bare-card figure until it is proven otherwise.
The three Exo-Tec zip binders
All three share the same construction: twenty double-sided pages, side-loading pockets, a lightweight padded layer built into each page, a padded water-resistant Exo-Tec cover, and a heavy-duty zipper. The pages are bound in rather than ring-mounted, so the count is the count.
- 4-pocket: up to 160 standard-sized cards; 245 × 190 mm, 30–45 mm deep
- 9-pocket: up to 360 standard-sized cards; 350 × 260 mm, 30–45 mm deep
- 12-pocket: up to 480 standard-sized cards; 350 × 330 mm, 30–45 mm deep
- All three: 68 × 97 mm internal pocket, archival-safe, acid-free, PVC-free
PVC-free, polymer unnamed
Every Exo-Tec listing states the materials are archival-safe, acid-free and PVC-free. None names the polymer. That is the difference between a claim you can check and one you take on trust: a page stated as polypropylene can be set against conservation guidance that lists polypropylene as chemically stable; a page stated only as “PVC-free” cannot.
It is the one soft spot in an otherwise unusually complete specification, and it is why the recommendations on this site that pick a Vault X binder say so in their stated limitation. The absence is not evidence of a problem. It is an absence.
Why the padded page matters more than the cover
Vault X describes a padded layer built into each page, separate from the padded cover. The cover protects the book; the page layer protects the cards from each other, which is the pressure that bends and creases a card in an overfilled binder.
It is a construction detail the capacity figure cannot show, and it is the kind of statement worth looking for on any binder listing, because it is specific enough to be either true or false.
Common questions
- What size are the pockets in a Vault X binder?
- 68 × 97 mm internal, on the 4-, 9- and 12-pocket Exo-Tec zip binders alike. A standard 66 × 91 mm sleeve fits with about 2 mm of width and 6 mm of height to spare.
- Are Vault X binders PVC-free?
- Vault X states that its Exo-Tec binders are made with archival-safe, acid-free, PVC-free materials. It does not name the polymer, so the claim cannot be checked against a material datasheet the way a stated polypropylene figure can.
- How many cards does a Vault X 9-pocket binder hold?
- Up to 360 standard-sized cards across twenty double-sided pages, by the manufacturer’s listing. The listing does not say whether that figure assumes sleeved cards, so treat it as a bare-card capacity.
- Where is Vault X based?
- Poole, Dorset, in the United Kingdom. The company states it was started in 2017 by four friends, and trades as Vault X Ltd.
