BCW

BCW is a US manufacturer of card storage and protection supplies whose listings are unusually specific about materials and capacities. Two published facts from its range matter more than any product recommendation: its standard toploader is rigid PVC, and its binder pages are sold in both polypropylene and vinyl — vinyl being PVC.

The material split nobody points out

BCW's binder page range includes pages described as "premium 115-micron polypropylene" and marked acid-free and PVC-free, and — in the same category — pages described as "heavy-duty, double-polished clear vinyl." Vinyl is PVC.

That is not a criticism of the manufacturer, which describes both accurately. It is a warning about how these are bought: a collector choosing "binder pages" without reading the material can end up with either, and only one is suitable for years of contact.

The same applies to rigid holders. BCW describes its standard 3 × 4 topload holder as rigid, high-clarity PVC. That is entirely appropriate for a transport product and it is the reason toploaders should not be treated as long-term storage — the US National Archives warns that PVC generates acids as it degrades and can transfer images off printed items, naming baseball cards among them.

The point thickness system

BCW publishes the definition that makes the whole holder market legible: one point equals 0.001 inches, or 0.0254 mm. A 35 pt holder accepts a card up to 0.035 inches thick.

It also publishes a printable point gauge and a coin-based rough guide for its thicker sizes — roughly a dime for 59 pt, a quarter for 79 pt, two quarters for 138 pt, five quarters for 360 pt.

Because point sizing is a measurement rather than a brand convention, it transfers. A card measured against a BCW gauge fits any manufacturer's holder of that rating.

Capacities, stated properly

BCW quotes capacity by sleeving state, which is the only useful way to quote it:

  • Large deck case — up to 120 single-sleeved or 100 double-sleeved cards, acid-free archival-safe polypropylene.
  • 1000-count gaming storage box — about 1000 unsleeved cards, or about 550 sleeved. Sleeving nearly halves it.
  • Slotted graded card box — 26 slabs, listed for PSA, CSG, CGC and PCG.
  • Graded trading card box — 30 slabs, listed for PSA, BGS, SGC, CSG and HGA.
  • 9-pocket binder pages — pockets of about 2 ⅝ × 3 ⅝ in, the same as a penny sleeve.

Why the graded box listings are worth reading closely

The two graded box entries above name different sets of grading companies. That is the specification, not a marketing flourish: graded slabs are not a standard size, so a box that fits one company's slab may not fit another's.

It is the clearest published evidence for a fact the grading companies themselves do not state — and it means "fits graded cards" with no list of graders is not a specification at all.
