KMC Card Barrier
KMC is a Japanese sleeve maker whose Card Barrier brand dates to March 1997. It publishes a thickness for every sleeve it sells, in millimetres and per face, which makes its range directly comparable with the makers that quote microns. It states that its products are made in Japan. It does not name the plastic any of them is made from, anywhere on its own site or in its own catalogue.
A thickness on every line, per face
Most of this category describes thickness with an adjective. KMC gives a number for every sleeve it sells, and gives it per face, which is the form that can actually be compared across brands.
The figures are in millimetres rather than microns, and converting is the only work the reader has to do: 0.05 mm is 50 microns, 0.1 mm is 100, 0.12 mm is 120. Set against the two makers on this site that publish microns, that puts the Perfect Size inner sleeve at the same 50 microns as Ultra Pro’s PRO-Fit inner sleeve, and the Perfect Hard at the same 100 microns as Dragon Shield’s Perfect Fit Thick.
The inner sleeves are also where the naming is clearest. Perfect Size is 64 × 89 mm at 0.05 mm; Perfect Hard is the same 64 × 89 mm at 0.1 mm, and KMC says plainly that it is twice the Perfect Size thickness. Two products, one variable, and the variable is published.
- Perfect Size, inner: 64 × 89 mm, 0.05 mm per face (50 µm), 100 per pack
- Perfect Hard, inner: 64 × 89 mm, 0.1 mm (100 µm), 50 per pack
- Card Barrier 100, outer: 66 × 91 mm, 0.05 mm (50 µm), 100 per pack
- Hyper Mat, outer: 66 × 91 mm, 0.1 mm clear face / 0.12 mm colour base, 64 per pack
- Mini Perfect, inner: 60 × 87 mm, 0.05 mm (50 µm), 100 per pack
- Hyper Mat Mini, outer: 62 × 89 mm, 0.1 mm clear / 0.12 mm colour base, 60 per pack
The two-figure sleeve, again
The Hyper Mat is published as 0.1 mm on the clear face and 0.12 mm on the coloured base. That is the same shape of statement Ultra Pro makes when it quotes a 90-micron front and a 120-micron back: a deck sleeve is not one thickness, it is two laminated together, and a maker that quotes a single number has chosen which half to tell you about.
KMC extends the same arithmetic up its range. The Hyper Mat Pro is 0.12 mm clear and 0.14 mm on the base, and the company states it is about 20% thicker than the regular Hyper Mat — a claim you can check against its own two figures rather than take on trust.
This matters for double-sleeving, because the thickness that decides whether a deck still closes in its box is the sum of every layer. A Perfect Size inner at 0.05 mm under a Hyper Mat at 0.1 and 0.12 is a stack KMC has published every component of.
It never names the plastic
For a maker this precise about dimensions, the omission is conspicuous. Nowhere on KMC’s own site, and nowhere in its own 2026 product catalogue, is any polymer named. There is no polypropylene statement, no PVC-free claim and no acid-free claim on any product.
Listings that say polypropylene do exist, on retailers and marketplaces. They are not the manufacturer, and this site does not print a material claim that the manufacturer has not made. So the honest line on a KMC sleeve is that its dimensions and thickness are published and its material is not.
What KMC publishes instead is origin. The about page commits to “the highest quality products made in Japan”, and every pack in the catalogue carries Made in Japan. Country of manufacture is a real and checkable claim. It is not a statement about what the plastic will do in contact with a card for ten years, which is the question the material answers.
Sizes by card class, not by game
KMC sorts its range into two classes and defines each by the card rather than by the game: standard size at 63 × 88 mm, and small size at 59 × 86 mm. It does not name Magic, Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh! on its sleeve pages at all.
That is unusual, and it is the more useful convention. A game can change its card size, and a card cannot be in two size classes at once. A maker that labels by game is making a compatibility claim it has to maintain; a maker that labels by millimetres is stating a fact.
The outer sleeve figures also line up with what the rest of this site has from other manufacturers. Card Barrier 100 and Hyper Mat are 66 × 91 mm, the same standard sleeve size Ultimate Guard and Gamegenic publish. Hyper Mat Mini is 62 × 89 mm, the same Japanese size. Three makers, independently, on the same two numbers.
One caution. KMC’s North American distributor lists some of the same products at slightly different sizes and pack counts — a 92 mm height against the maker’s 91, and packs of 80 or 100 against the maker’s 64. Where the two disagree, the figures above are the manufacturer’s own.
The PSA Saver, and a second published wall thickness
KMC makes a semi-rigid holder for grading submission, co-developed with PSA: the PSA Saver, at 84 × 125 mm, 0.3 mm per side, ten to a pack, and stated as made entirely in Japan.
That 0.3 mm figure is worth putting beside the other semi-rigid holder documented on this site. Cardboard Gold publishes 9 mil for its Card Savers, which is 0.009 inches, or about 0.23 mm — and it does not say whether that figure is per side. KMC says per side explicitly. So two makers now publish a wall thickness for a submission holder, in different units, with one of them specifying how it is measured.
It is also the one KMC product where the absence of a material statement bites hardest. A holder that a card sits in while it waits to be graded, shipped and handled is a long-contact enclosure, and the polymer is the thing you would most want named.
Common questions
- How thick are KMC sleeves?
- KMC publishes a figure per face for every line, in millimetres. Perfect Size inner sleeves are 0.05 mm, or 50 microns; Perfect Hard inner sleeves and the Hyper Mat’s clear face are 0.1 mm, or 100 microns; the Hyper Mat’s coloured base is 0.12 mm. The Hyper Mat Pro is 0.12 mm clear and 0.14 mm on the base.
- What are KMC sleeves made of?
- KMC does not say. No polymer is named anywhere on its own site or in its own product catalogue, and there is no acid-free or PVC-free claim on any product. Retailer listings that state polypropylene are not the manufacturer. What KMC does state is that its products are made in Japan.
- What size are KMC Perfect Size sleeves?
- 64 × 89 mm at 0.05 mm per face, 100 per pack, sold as an inner sleeve for standard-size cards. Perfect Hard is the same 64 × 89 mm at 0.1 mm, which KMC describes as twice the thickness, in packs of 50.
- What size KMC sleeves do Yu-Gi-Oh! cards need?
- KMC’s small size, which it defines as cards of 59 × 86 mm rather than by naming the game. Hyper Mat Mini is the outer sleeve at 62 × 89 mm; Mini Perfect is the inner at 60 × 87 mm. KMC does not name any game on its sleeve pages.
- What is the KMC PSA Saver?
- A semi-rigid holder for grading submission, which KMC describes as co-developed with PSA. It is 84 × 125 mm, 0.3 mm per side, ten to a pack, and stated as made entirely in Japan. KMC does not name the plastic.
- Who makes KMC sleeves?
- KMC Co., Ltd., of Nihonbashi in Tokyo. The company states it was established on 1 April 2019 and that the Card Barrier brand itself dates to March 1997, at what it calls the dawn of card games.
